COVID – 19 cases resurface across Asia with a new Variant

New Delhi: May 20, 2025. A new wave of Covid – 19 has reportedly
resurfaced in parts of Asia namely China, Singapore, Hongkong , Thailand and
India . According to the Ministry of Health and Family welfare a modest increase
in cases is being witnessed with 257 active infections across the country . The new
variant is named as JN.1 . But the infections in Singapore increased over to 14000
cases and this increase has been linked to L.F . 7 and N.B 1.8 variants that are
sub-lineages of the broader JN.1 variant .
The Yale medicine has reported that the JN.1 strain is a descendant of BA
2.86 ( REFERRED TO AS PIROLA ) which has been a lineage of Omicron variant .
The difference between these two is that JN.1 has undergone one mutation in its
spike protein which is single chain that may or may not alter any of the traits that
characterize the virus , but it may provide extra immune evasion . The present
variant had been detected in 2023 and was classified as variant of interest by the
WHO. The Yale medicine has further reported that though the present variant
might have been evolved with additional mutations and despite it’s being
genetically clever doctors say it is not necessarily more severe .
Some Doctors in India are warning against the waning vaccine induced
immune system of human beings as most of the citizens had been vaccinated
much before in 2021 ., but some others are not so much concerned regarding the
spread as Indian citizens overcame the infections of many sub variants of Covid –
19 like the Omicron .
Covid – 19 has been said to stay with us foe ever and we have adopted the
new normal . So we should always be ready to manage any surge in cases arising
out any of the new variants of COVID. COVID-19 refers to Corona virus disease
and 19 refers to the year in which it was detected . The virus brought the world
almost to a standstill for three consecutive years starting from 2019 to 2022
killing millions of people across globe .
